Created in 2012 by Rachel James, Pear Nova is a beauty brand dedicated to celebrating all skin tones. James noticed a void in the representation of medium to dark skin tones in the nail world and committed to bridging that gap. With gorgeous nudes that flatter melanin rich skin, it’s hard to not love Pear Nova.
I was able to catch up with James to ask her a few questions. Let’s get into it!
What do you feel sets you apart from other businesses in your category? My team and I - our experiences, our visions, our inspiration, our work ethic, our creativity. Even if other companies are making the same products no one has the Pear Nova formula and I don’t mean the polish.
When you started your business, what was one of the hardest things you had to overcome first? What was the easiest? Running a new business while having a newborn and a 5 year old was the hardest thing to navigate. It seemed like my journey moved twice as slow. The easiest thing was coming up with nail shades and collections. I had so many color palettes in my head that I wanted to create.
When you overcome difficult things, what does it teach you about yourself? That my power is limitless and I should have more confidence in that.
How has being Black helped you in your business? I’ve been lucky enough to come across amazing black women business owners who have reached out their hands to help me to the next step and I look to do the same. It gives big sis, lil sis entrepreneur family vibes that you won’t get from anywhere else.
What's that one piece of business advice that has helped you the most? Take time off. I used to think that I had to be productive every single day (at night and on weekends too) for my business, but I was being spread too thin and the work I was doing wasn’t my best.
What's one wild dream you have for your business? Michelle Obama must wear Michelle Our Mama one day.
I hope that the nail gods are listening because Michelle Our Mama is a gorgeous shade and as an experienced manicurist, I can tell you, this would match our forever First Lady perfectly.
